President Donald Trump threatened Tuesday to have the federal government take control of Washington, D.C., after an assault on a well-known original staffer for the Department of Government Efficiency in the nation’s capital over the weekend. Edward Coristine, also known by his online name, “Big Balls,” and a woman in a police report as his significant other were the victims of an unarmed attempted carjacking early Sunday. On Tuesday, the Washington Metropolitan Police declared the arrest of two 15-year-old suspects from Maryland.
In a social media post, President Trump, without naming Coristine, claimed that crime in Washington is “totally out of control.”
He told that local youths, teens and gang members—some as young as 14 to 16—are “randomly attacking, mugging, maiming, and shooting innocent citizens,” while being aware that they’ll likely be released almost immediately.

He further further, “If Washington, D.C. doesn’t get its situation under control—and swiftly—we’ll be left with no choice but to suppose federal authority over the city and manage it properly, sending a strong message to offenders and sinners that they won’t be allowed to walk free anymore.”
Elon Musk, the Former DOGE head shared a screenshot of Trump’s post on X, recalling the call for federal oversight of Washington. In his post, Musk also told an unknown DOGE worker involved in a recent incident.
According to Musk, “a group of young teenagers tried to attack a woman while she was sitting in a car in DC at night time.” He also added, “A Member of the Dodge team was present and saved her eventually. The woman was severely injured.”
According to the police report, the vehicle involved in this incident was registered to Edward Coristine. Officers reported seeing approximately 10 youngsters surrounding the car and attacking Coristine. As the cops arrived, all but two suspects ran away. The two remaining individuals were arrested at the scene.
Coristine told officers he pushed his significant other into the vehicle for safety and then turned to oppose the attackers, who proceeded to assault him.
The case is currently under investigation by the Carjacking Task Force, with several suspects still at large. Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. attorney for Washington, posted a video on X on Tuesday saying she had just met with Trump to discuss “crime in the nation’s capital.”
“Our job is to get guns off the street, remove drugs, hold accountable those involved in threats and carjackings, and make this city safe and risk-free again,” Pirro stated. “That’s exactly what we’re going to do. And if you don’t support that mission, you’ll have to deal with us.”
She did not mention Coristine in her video.
Despite Trump’s declaration of “out of control” violence and cruelty in Washington, preliminary police data shows that violent crime is down 26% compared to the same period last year. At the same time, the supposed attack on Coristine comes about a month after a 21-year-old congressional intern was caught in crossfire and fatally shot in Washington.
Trump has previously described a desire to “clean up” the nation’s capital and has threatened a federal takeover of Washington, which already has limited ability to self-govern. Congress has the authority to revoke those powers at its own and the president’s discretion.
